Why is my kitchen sink making a gurgling sound?

When your sink talks to you, there is likely an issue. The gurgling noise usually means that there is an issue with the airflow in the drainpipe. The issue could be a clog or blockage or the result of improper installation.

Even if your sink is gurgling, your water is probably still draining although, likely more slowly than normal. If a drain line becomes partially obstructed, water will drain but air gets trapped at the obstruction which results in the gurgling you are hearing. If you have a dishwasher and bubbles come up in your sink when the dishwasher is running, you likely have a partial obstruction.

If the clog appears to be minor, you may want to try using a plunger. And, as tempting as it is to go buy stock in liquid drain cleaners, use caution. These products contain harsh dangerous chemicals and often can do more damage than good. This is especially important to remember if you have older drain lines as the structure of those lines may be somewhat compromised simply due to their age.

It’s important to get this issue fixed when you first notice it. If the problem goes unattended, debris will continue to collect in the drain and the obstruction will grow in size until the drain line is completely blocked. This could be bad news that results in a larger (and likely more expensive) problem to repair.
